The Handwriting Practice Sheet
Rosemary Carroll worked as Kurt Cobain's attorney when he was alive. After his death, Carroll had met Tom Grant and expressed to him that she does not believe Cobain was suicidal. She has suspicions that he was murdered.
In the books Love and Death and The Mysterious Death of Kurt Cobain, it is written that a week after Cobain died, Carroll had shown Grant a couple of notes. One was a handwriting practice sheet and another was a small note with the words 'Get Arrested' written. Carroll had claimed that Courtney Love came to visit her at her house on 6th April 1994 and left a backpack. She found those two notes from this backpack. The handwriting on the practice sheet is said to be similar to Cobain's handwriting. In other words, someone was trying to copy his handwriting. It's generally suspected that Courtney was the one who was practicing Cobain's handwriting to forge the suicide note which was found at the scene.
In chapter 6 of the book, Who Killed Kurt Cobain? by Ian Halperin and Max Wallace, it is written that Courtney went to Peninsula Hotel in L.A. on 28th March 1994. She was doing a detox treatment there. Then on 7th April 1994, she got arrested.
Before we can accept the handwriting practice sheet as an evidence to prove the conspiracy theory we must first verify if Courtney did leave the hotel on 6th April 1994 to visit Carroll. If Courtney did leave the hotel then questions can be asked. If Courtney didn't leave the hotel then Carroll is lying about the visit and the handwriting practice sheet loses its credibility as an evidence. The note was likely fabricated by Carroll to provide an evidence to make the murder theory credible.
Why would Carroll create a fabricated evidence?
I have read some comments around where people claim this whole conspiracy theory itself is a conspiracy created by people who hate Courtney Love and blame her for causing Cobain to commit suicide. Whether he was murdered or not, Courtney is blamed for Cobain's death. These people who believe that it was because of his wife that Cobain killed himself are seeking to take revenge on her. And so they created this conspiracy theory to destroy her life in order to bring 'justice' to Cobain's death.
If this is true, then it's likely this is the reason Rosemary Carroll had fabricated the handwriting practice sheet and presented it to Tom Grant as evidence. Either that or they both conspired together to fabricate evidence to punish Courtney.
I don't know if Grant's motivation for supporting this theory is because he has a genuine doubt about Cobain's death or he just hates his widow and like others, blames her for his suicide and wants to punish her. I can sense that Grant habours hatred towards Courtney but is he having this hatred because he believes she is a murderer or is it because he blames her for Cobain's suicide? I can't tell for sure.
However, I have a reason to suspect that this conspiracy theory itself is a conspiracy created to cause harm to Courtney Love's life based on the ways some people I encountered who support this theory have behaved. For instance, I have seen comments around the internet where fans who support the conspiracy theory have written sentences like 'Even if Kurt wasn't murdered, Courtney caused him to kill himself.' or 'Kurt would have been alive if he never met/married Courtney.' Other times I see fans refuse to believe that 225mg of heroin is about 0.225ml, not 225ml or 225 units despite giving them an explanation to the dosage measurement. I even suggested they can google it. Then I am met with resistance and accusations of being Courtney Love herself or someone being paid by her to spread this 'lie'. They like to slander me so that people don't believe in me. The way they behave is like they are forcing this theory to be true rather than believing this theory is true.
I won't say everyone who supports the theory is motivated by this reason. I know some people have a genuine doubt about Cobain's death and I don't discourage these people to study the case and consider the possibility that Cobain was murdered.
Now, in Carroll's defense, her ex-husband, Danny Goldberg, who had worked as Nirvana's manager, had alleged that Tom Grant had edited his tape recordings such that it supports the theory. In other words, he is claiming that the conversations between Tom Grant and Rosemary Carroll did not happen the way Grant had portrayed. (Here's an online article about it. There is also a video of this interview which you can watch here.)
I can't say that Goldberg's allegation is true but I think we should put what he said into consideration.
To summarize before I end.
- Rosemary Carroll had claimed Courtney Love came to visit her on 6th April 1994 and left a backpack where she found a handwriting practice sheet.
- It is said that the handwriting in the practice sheet was similar to Cobain's. Someone was trying to copy his handwriting.
- It is suspected Courtney was practicing Cobain's handwriting to forge the suicide note.
- Courtney was at Peninsula Hotel from 28th March 1994 till her arrest on 7th April 1994.
- We need to verify that Courtney had left Peninsula Hotel on 6th April 1994 before we accept the evidence provided by Rosemary Carroll to be credible.
- If Courtney didn't leave the hotel on 6th April 1994, then there is a reason to doubt the credibility of the handwriting practice sheet.
- Carroll may have fabricated the handwriting practice sheet.
- Some fans say this conspiracy theory itself is a conspiracy created and supported by people who blame Courtney for Cobain's suicide and the purpose of this conspiracy is to punish Courtney Love. Some people are of the opinion that Cobain's marriage to Courtney was the cause of his unhappiness in life and prompted him to commit suicide. It is said these people habour a grudge against Courtney and seek to destroy her life with this conspiracy theory. If this is true then it explains why Carroll would fabricate evidence to support this theory. Again, we need to verify whether Courtney left the hotel on 6th April 1994 or not.
